Steve began his career in New Zealand where he helped his father build race cars. At the same time, he was competing in go-kart events winning several championships. Despite his success behind the wheel, Steve made the switch full time to being a racing mechanic before moving to the United States in 1997.

Steve’s first job in the U.S. was in the Toyota Atlantic Series, a junior open-wheel category, before being tapped to work for the Players Forsythe Chamionship Racing (CART/Indy Cars) program in 1999, where he remained for nine seasons.

Steve spent five years as Crew Chief to Paul Tracy and together they won 12 races, made the podium 26 times, and captured 13 poles. Their success was highlighted by Tracy’s 2003 CART Championship run. In 2006 Steve was promoted to Operations Manager and Crew Chief at Forsythe Racing.

At the end of the 2007 season, Steve joined KV Racing Technology and was instrumental in helping the team make the difficult transition from the Champ Car World Series to the IndyCar Series following unification prior to the start of the 2008 season. Steve oversaw the team’s switch from the Panoz chassis to the Dallara IndyCar chassis and was responsible for all facets of racecar preparation, maintenance, paint, carbon fiber & fabrication departments, technical development and team logistics. He also served as the Crew Chief for Will Power.

Despite the challenges, KVRT was the most consistent and highest ranked team to make the transition and was the only transition team to finish in the top-10 in the final standings.

In 2012, Steve was named Team Manager at KVRT and assumed control of all day-to-day operations of the team. Then in 2013 Steve was named General Manager. Under his guidance, KVRT had its best season in team history and captured the most prestigious race in the world, the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

Throughout his racing career Steve has pursued his passion, collecting, restoring, customizing, and selling classic cars. Many of his projects have won awards in and around the Indianapolis area. This success led him to open his own shop, The Car Vault, in 2015.

In 2016, Steve decided to focus on his new business full-time, leaving KVRT.

In 2018 Steve teamed up with the Ferrari Challenge Series as Crew Chief, helping the team to finish runner up for the season Championship. Returning as Crew Chief in 2019, Steve was essential in capturing the Championship win for the 2019 season.
