Steve brings over 30+ years
of automotive & racing experience to The Car Vault Restorations.
Steve began his career in New Zealand helping his father build race cars, while competing in go-kart events, where he won several championships. He transitioned full-time to a racing mechanic before moving to the United States in 1997.
His first U.S. job was in the Toyota Atlantic Series, a junior open-wheel category. In 1999, he joined the Players Forsythe Championship Racing (CART/Indy Cars) program, where he remained for nine seasons.
Steve spent five years as Crew Chief to Paul Tracy. Together, they achieved 12 wins, 26 podiums, 13 poles, and captured the 2003 CART Championship title.
At the end of the 2007 season, Steve joined KV Racing Technology (KVRT) and managed the team’s transition from the Champ Car World Series to the IndyCar Series following the 2008 unification. He oversaw the switch from the Panoz to the Dallara chassis and was responsible for managing race car preparation, maintenance, paint, carbon fiber, fabrication, technical development, and logistics.
Under his management, KVRT became the most consistent transition team and the only one to finish in the top 10 in the final standings.
He also served as the Crew Chief for Will Power, winning the final ChampCar Race in Long Beach in 2008.
Prior to the 2012 season, Steve was elected to run the Chevy Engine Development Program with the new DW12 Dallara.
In 2012, Steve was named General Manager at KVRT, assuming control of day-to-day operations. Under his guidance, the team had its best seasons in company history, highlighted by winning the Indianapolis 500 in 2013 with Tony Kannan.
Throughout his career, Steve also pursued his passion for collecting, restoring, customizing, and selling classic cars, winning numerous awards around Indianapolis. This success led him to open his own shop, The Car Vault, in 2015. He left KVRT in 2016 to focus on this business full-time.
In 2018, Steve joined the Ferrari Challenge Series as fly in Crew Chief, helping the team finish as season runner-up, followed by a Championship win in 2019.
By 2019, The Car Vault had outgrown two different shops and continued to expand with new projects and builds.
In 2023, Steve formed TCV Manufacturing to design and manufacture custom parts for both the restoration and racing industries, with a focus on quick turnaround.
He established Moore Motorsports in 2024, to provide race car preparation and track support for a rapidly growing customer base.
In 2025, Steve teamed up with Tom Kelley and Rick Rohrman to form MKR Racing, providing a comprehensive driver testing development service to drivers, teams, and enthusiasts wanting more open wheel experience. Additionally, Steve reconnected with Paul Tracy, who provides support with driver coaching, as needed.
